Brief History of Malaysian Students Department, Canada
Malaysian Students Department Canada was established in April, 1980 at the High Commission of Malaysia office in Ottawa, headed by a Director, two home-based staff members and locally recruited staff.
In July 15, 1982 MSD Canada was relocated in (Downtown) Toronto, as a Consulate office. The department was headed by a director with thirteen home-based-staff members and locally recruited staff.
In 1998, the department was downsized was again relocated to Ottawa at the High Commission of Malaysia office building. MSD Canada is now head by an Education Attache’ and supported by two locally recruited staff.
Mission
The mission of MSD Canada is to provide services with excellent, efficient, as well as showing concern for the students’welfare, in order to make sure that their personality development and academic achievement are in a stable condition, so that they will be able to get hold of good education and simultaneously, uphold the country’s image in quality of education and international relation
Aims
Align with the Malaysian Human Resource plan and objective, MSD Canada aims to provide services of looking after the welfare of Malaysian students by providing them with facilities or guidance as much as they needed. Apart from that, MSD Canada is also responsible in managing matters regarding education as to promote Malaysia as the centre of education excellence in Asian region.
Objective
To advise the Ministry of Higher Education and sponsoring agencies on matters relating to students’ welfare and their academic development in Canada.
To establish cooperation and linkages between Malaysian educational institutions and Canadian universities/educational institutions in Canada.
To develop and enhance networking and communication between the Malaysian Students Department with educational institutions in Canada.
To advice and assist the orientation/familiarization activities of Malaysian students upon their arrival in Canada.
To provide academic counseling and other professional development services to Malaysian students studying in Canadian universities/educational institutions.
To promote and exchange cultural activities between Malaysian students and other international students in Canada’s universities /educational institutions.
To maintain and update the database and the profile of Malaysian students in Canada.
To coordinate the meetings of Malaysian leaders and/or government officials with Malaysian students in Canada.
To advice and provide support services to Malaysians Student Associations/Society/Clubs in Canada’s universities/educational institutions.
To facilitate and manage the Malaysian Students Department as a One-Stop Centre for information on Education in Malaysia.
To liaise and provide support services to Malaysian officials for their study visit to Canadian educational institutions.
