Students overseas urged to register with government
PASIR GUDANG : Students studying abroad are urged to register with the country’s student departments or embassies, said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seeri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
He pointed out that the ministry only had a database of Malaysian students who were sponsored by the Government or have scholarships to study overseas.
“The ministry have also set up a website for students to register themselves. However, many of them have not done so as yet’, he told reporters after opening the new KipMart hypermarket in Masai here on Saturday.
He added that countries such as Australia had legislation such as the Freedom of Information Act, which do not allow information to be shared.
“This is the reason why we need our own database as these types of acts do not allow the countries to provide us with such information in case of emergency,” he said.
Mohamed Khaled urges students or parents who had children studying abroad to register as soon as possible.
“This would make it easier to locate the students if there is a natural disaster or unrest in the country,” he said.
He cited the recent unrest in Egypt and the earthquake in New Zealand where many worried parents contacted the ministry, which was also unable to provide details on the students there.
Meanwhile, he added that the National Security Council had given the green light for Malaysian students to return to Egypt.
He said the council received input from the Malaysian Embassy in Egypt stating that the country was stable.
